‘Gun nuts’ focused on wrong issues
Children’s safety should be primary concern as debate rages

Lately, with gun control being the big
political subject of debate, we have seen
that the argument has been blown out
of proportion by many. When a school
shooting happens, it seems that both
extremes of the argument use them as
political points.
As sensible gun laws are essential to
keeping a society safe, we should also
keep in mind that we do indeed have
the Second Amendment, and until that
is gone, the government cannot simply
“take your guns.”
However, the sad fact is that the hysteria
and sensationalism surrounding
the gun control debate is that people
seem to be more worried about losing
their guns than the mass murders that
had actually sparked this touchy political
topic.
As NRA membership actually surges
after a shooting and gun companies join
in on the fight, the battle again comes
back around to a profit motive with the
NRA claiming they are protecting citizens’
rights to bear arms when they are
actually only protecting gun manufacturers
and their profits. They even say
that if more “responsible” gun owners
carried, our streets and children will be
safer from armed criminals.
They spew an absurd notion that boils
down to this: more guns equals more
protection, which in turn will make the
public more safe.
This is not only absurd but sinister.
The NRA is playing on the fear of the
actual shootings to apply dangerous
rhetoric. We see this time and time again
from this bunch of clowns: encouraging
more guns on the streets for safety. Of
all things, they put safety at the center of
this debate.
As the NRA continues their gun glorifying
crusade of absurdity, they blame
everything except guns for gun violence
in America.
It makes one wonder — when will the
masses finally call out this absurd notion
instead of bisecting this abhorrent debate
on whether or not we should have
sensible gun control laws?
It seems that there should be more to
simply stand up boldly and say that they
do not want their children growing up
in a violent, gun-glorifying society where
a large percentage of the population are
carrying deadly weapons.
The far right will constantly barrage
the public with a message of fear-mongering
and paranoia, as they put our future
generations of kids at risk in their
crusade for arming more to the teeth in
a gun-loving society.
They will call the people who advocate
even the most moderate and sensible of
gun laws spineless when they who hold
their weapons dear are truly the real
cowards — feeding off fear for profit
and using scare tactics to create an even
more hostile and dangerous atmosphere
in American communities.
The gun nuts need to hold their horses
and realize that their guns are not
being taken, but they will not be able to
get any assault weapon at the snap of the
finger.
However, the unrealistic idealist needs
to realize taking guns away from the
populace is also not the right approach,
nor is it pragmatic politics.
We have a Second Amendment
and that is understood, but that
does not mean abolishing or fighting
any kind of law that applies to
firearms.
For us to be pragmatic and to
seek a safer future, we must find
a balance and seek a realistic approach
that is not totally set in
political philosophy and ideology
rather than the simple reality
of what is going on in the
streets and schools of America
today — violence.
And the way to curb this
is definitely not to glorify
guns and fight to “protect
our guns.”
It is to fight to protect
our children, our peace,
and the tranquility of
the communities of our
nation.
