CVS Pharmacy pulling tobacco products
Is it a sincere effort to improve health?
This past Wednesday, CVS announced that they will pull tobacco products from their shelves starting Oct. 1.
This will make them the largest national pharmacy to do this. It will cost them an estimated $2 billion in annual sales, but they say that it sends an important message about them as a pharmacy.
They want to be known as a place that promotes healthy individuals, not the opposite.
I completely agree that the idea of a pharmacy selling tobacco products is a bit ironic due to the "health hazards" of these products.
However, what does this move really mean in the future?
CVS is the second largest national pharmacy, only behind Walgreens. Will Walgreens follow suit and take tobacco products off their shelves?
Actually, I believe that CVS will either drop this idea or bring tobacco back soon after taking it off their shelves.
My reason: tobacco makes vast amounts of money for companies.
Even though Barack Obama has gave his approval, money talks loudest of all. I just don't see how a company competing in this economy can make a move like this.
Let's look at an example of what I am talking about: If you and your friend are running a race and your friend had an edge over you, would you take a water break? I doubt it.
So, there are several different things that could be going on with CVS.
They may believe they can't keep competing with Walgreens, so this is a strategic move to try to gain anti-tobacco customers.
Maybe they are completely fine being the second largest.
They also may just really want to better their image as a pharmacy.
It is undoubtedly an interesting move by CVS.
Personally, I agree with the move because they are a pharmacy.
However, I have my doubts that they can really afford to make this move or that they will even follow through with it.
I am a smokeless tobacco user myself. I am not anti-tobacco products when I say that I agree with this move, I just believe that a health care store shouldn't sell products that can potentially cause serious harm.
