Resident Evil recycles old plots in fifth installment
The fifth installment of the "Resident Evil" franchise has arrived, picking up directly after the events of the previous film.
Alice has been captured and must now escape the Umbrella Corporation's secret biological lab. She sets out with the help of Albert Wesker, and now Umbrella is being run by the red queen - the dysfunctional security program from the first film.
Alice and Wesker's top agent, Ada Wong, are out to escape the facility with help from his backup team, consisting of Barry, Leon and Luther.
Okay, I decently enjoyed the "Resident Evil" films ever since the first one, but have slowly watched them get worse and worse as the series continues. My hopes were high upon noting that "Afterlife" was a big improvement over "Extinction" and I went into "Retribution" thinking that this could have a shot at restoring the franchise to its original appeal.
However, I can honestly say that this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. For the "Resident Evil" fans out there that have not yet seen this, I beg you to just let this one go and save your money.
The film has relentless plot holes. From the opening scene, I found myself thinking, "I thought they killed Wesker with a massive bomb in the end of the last movie? How is he in this one?"
However, the film never explains how or why he is alive. Alice doesn't even look surprised when she sees him alive.
You remember Chris Redfield? Yeah, he isn't in this one at all, nor is he even mentioned. With this new film you really see nothing new at all. Let us take stock: Alice is captured by Umbrella. That has happened at least three times. She has to escape an Umbrella Facility. That has also happened. All of the monsters are repeat monsters from the previous films, as are most of the characters.
Essentially everyone who you have seen die in the first three films, the Umbrella Corporation has clones of, and can make them all evil. However, now Zombies can apparently carry guns and swim in this new installment. Nearly everything is a constant action sequence and no one ever runs out of ammo.
One feature that is extremely overplayed is that EVERY fight scene is in slow motion, which is nice to watch during the first two, but then you realize every fight scene is in slow motion. At the end of the film you realize that you sat in the theater for an extra 15 minutes because they decided to put everything in slow motion.
"Resident Evil: Retribution" is a lousy excuse for a film. They explain nothing and do not even attempt to do so. The plot is a feeble, recycled from the previous films and seems to exist solely for the purpose of trying to market Milla Jovovitch in a skin tight outfit, to show some flashy action scenes and to further cash-in on the franchise.
The end is also very anti-climactic and leaves off in yet another cliff hanger. If you have ever seen a "Resident Evil" film before, then you know that the end always has a scary looking monster for the most part as the climactic villain. In this film, the main villain is a tough Michelle Rodriguez, so no new monster there for you.
The only positive thing I can say about this movie was that some of the scenery was nice. Other than that, this movie is a complete waste of time, life and money, which is why I give this movie only a 1/2 a star out of 5 (and it is lucky to get that).
