Mother Nature has a way of reminding us how influential she can be. With the heavy and persistent rain seen this summer, the construction crews of the new parking garage have seen multiple delays and have lost work days.
The garage, which was originally on schedule to be completed before classes started and add more than 1,200 parking spaces, is now set to be completed in mid-October.
Bill Rasnick, associate vice president of the physical plant, said that while the contractor had hoped to finish the garage before classes started, they were not contractually obligated.
“The contract date on the garage has always been after classes started,” Rasnick said. “The contractor agreed from the beginning to try and work toward an earlier completion date, but was not contractually obligated. They have worked very hard under very difficult conditions to complete the garage for the start of school, but were just not able to do that.”
According to Rasnick, this summer has seen more days lost due to weather than actual work days. Despite the heavy delays over the summer and no indication that the rain showers are going to let up anytime soon, Rasnick still believes that the garage will be completed on or before the expected completion date.
While the parking garage remains unfinished, other roads and lots will be open on the first day for students to utilize.
According to a statement released by the university, North Dossett Drive, which runs between Warf-Pickel and Lucille-Clement halls, will be open to motorists on Move-In Day.
Jack Vest Drive, which now crosses from State of Franklin Road to J.L. Seehorn Drive, opens on Aug. 23. Lot 21, the new lot behind Warf-Pickel, which will provide additional parking to faculty and students, opens on the same day.
With most classes beginning on Aug. 26, students are encouraged to arrive early to allow additional time for parking.
Overflow parking will be available at Thomas Stadium and at Buc Village.
The BUCSHOT shuttle service will also be available to assist students.
The shuttle service will run from all student parking areas. Services will also be offered to Buc Village and Thomas Stadium. More information about the BUCSHOT and its schedule can be found at www.johnsoncitytransit.org/servicearea_routemaps.htm
