Degree Works is revolutionizing the way students can track their progress in receiving their degrees.
An academic advising and degree audit tool, Degree Works provides students and their advisors with a comprehensive way to monitor progress toward degree completion.
By utilizing Degree Works, students can view the courses they have completed, the courses that they still need to take, and any other requirements that must be met for a specific degree to be received.
Degree Works’ motto, “Degree Now, Not Later,” describes the mission of this system, which is to help students complete their degree in a timely manner.
“It’s a program that will help people get on track,” Degree Audit Specialist Evelyn Roach said.
“It was launched on May 1 and we’re really trying to promote it now in the fall.”
“You can use this system to make sure that you’re taking the right classes,” she said. “Also, you can track your GPA, view what proficiency-intensive courses are required, plan for future semesters, and create ‘What-If’ audits.”
The “What-If” feature allows students to experiment with their major and minor. By selecting various considered majors and minors students can view a list of courses, both previously taken and uncompleted, they would need if they chose those particular programs.
“The ‘What-If’ part is my favorite thing about Degree Works,” Vice Provost for Enrollment Services Ramona Williams said. “It’s especially helpful for students who are considering changing their current major or for students who are currently undecided.”
While Degree Works is a useful and convenient tool, it is not meant to be used by itself.
“Degree Works does not replace an academic advisor,” Williams said. “A web-based tool like this just can’t be substituted for the good relationship and assistance that a student receives from an advisor.”
Roach agreed with Williams, saying, “This is not meant to take the place of an academic advisor; it is meant as an advising tool.”
All students are eligible for Degree Works, which can easily be accessed via GoldLink.
