Dear Editor,
The lifestyle column is rather bland on a regular basis, with commentary on pop culture and style. Why not bring it home, here on campus or in the region? Discuss things like local art, music, and events.
How about having someone write reviews of local art shows at Nelson Fine Art, the AR Gallery, the Reece Museum, the Johnson City Area Arts Council or other venues?
Perhaps a music reviewer that would review local shows at the Down Home or Heather’s Hideaway … or someone could write an article about this year’s prestigious Basler Chair, Mel Chin, who will be doing a public lecture and showing his art work at the Culp Auditorium September 8 at 7 p.m.
What about articles about the election coming up, with student opinions?
I expect more from the paper. It needs to have more energy and better writing all around.
Ericka Basile is one of the best people who has ever written for it. Last year I opened that paper just to read her pieces.
I also think you need to be in contact with the art, music and theatre departments so that you always list all the art exhibitions and performances going on on campus. Having those listings will actually make people read the paper more.
In other words, recruit more good writers.
