Dear Editor, As I read the article regarding students' use of blackface at a fraternity party, my opinion whipsawed back and forth. At first I thought it was horrible, then I thought if they were dressed as famous rappers it's halfway OK, then I thought that, no, it's just inappropriate.
Dear Editor, As an American, I have strong respect for the political opinions of others. I hold closely to the belief that "different" does not correlate directly with "incorrect." In fact the two words are no more synonymous than hot and cold. Let me begin by saying how much I appreciate and respect the congratulatory tone of the piece in the opening sentence.
Dear Editor, I do not think it is fair for the act of dressing up as someone of another race to warrant diversity training. As the comment from Matthew Buckingham in the article said, it is something that people do all the time with many different races and cultures.
Dear Editor, I feel the controversy of the blackface incident could be seen as "offensive," but we also could say there is a controversy over just about anything that goes on here at ETSU. I feel it is controversial that people who smoke have to smoke in their cars and are not allowed by the new smoking rules to smoke near their motorcycles.
