Bells rang out over campus Wednesday as hundreds gathered on the lawn between Burgin-Dossett and Gilbreath halls to watch university officials dedicate the school's newest landmark, the ETSU Foundation Carillon and Alumni Plaza. "This artfully crafted musical instrument represents what will become an icon of this university," said Leslie Parks Pope, who sits on the Tennessee Board of Regents and the ETSU Foundation.
At least 55 people died, floods engulfed thousands of homes and shell-shocked survivors retreated to attics and wind-blown roofs Monday as one of the most sweeping hurricane disasters of modern times ravaged the upper Gulf Coast. Authorities in Mississippi blamed Hurricane Katrina for 50 deaths in the Gulfport and Biloxi area.
"Whether you're choosing to pledge or not, rushing is a great way to meet new friends right away and make memories that you'll carry with you forever," said Susan Roach, vice-president of membership for Pan-Hellenic. Sorority and fraternity recruitment begins Monday at ETSU.
The sixth annual Vendor Showcase welcomed back students this week. The showcase, held outside the Charles C. Sherrod Library, gives chamber members businesses a chance to present and showcase their products and services. It also gives students a chance to be treated to an afternoon of freebies, food, contests, music and games.
