Dear Editor:
In reference to Neil Haefs’ letter of Sept. 20, about banning cars from campus, may I ask a couple of questions and make some comments?
If we ban cars from campus, where in the city do you propose to park those cars of commuters, like myself, and how do we with disabilities get to campus besides using the buses? I use a rolling backpack. It’s heavy and difficult to get in and out of a car let alone a bus.
Car exhaust doesn’t trigger my asthma nearly as badly as does the cigarette smoke, unless the car belches out the blue-gray oil burn smoke, which means someone doesn’t care enough about others to either park or fix the clunker. I feel it would make for hardships for some students and faculty to ban cars from campus.
He does make an excellent point, however, about students being careless while driving. I’ve nearly been hit a couple of times myself, both walking and in the car. Please slow down and take your time. You might just save a fellow student’s life.
